Where the law stands on treating animals: The Protection of Animals Act 1911: Legally the owner of any animal may give appropriate treatment so long as it is not considered invasive. The Veterinary Surgery (exemptions) Order 1962: It is illegal for any Complimentary Therapy to be administered to an animal by anyone other than the owner unless veterinary permission has first been granted. Anyone who knowingly allows their animal to suffer through withholding veterinary attention may be prosecuted. New animal welfare laws in WalesFrom March 2007 animal welfare laws in Wales are being improved. Not only is it against the law to be cruel to an animal, you must now also ensure that the animal’s welfare needs are met. What does the new law do? Makes owners responsible for ensuring that their animal’s welfare needs are met. These include the need: For a suitable environment (place to live) For a suitable diet To exhibit normal behaviour patterns To be housed with or apart from other animals (if applicable) To be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease Anyone who is cruel to an animal or does not provide for its welfare needs may be banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison. It also increases the minimum age of buying an animal to 16 and prohibits giving animals as prizes to unaccompanied children under this age. Want to find out more? Phone: 029 2082 3477 |
